Pre-K Classrooms

The 3 and 4 year old classrooms at Amherst Baby & Childcare Center, Inc. are both Pre-K classrooms.  The focus of the 3 year old classroom is fostering independence.  The children are encouraged to develop self help skills such as dressing, toileting and proper table manners.

The four year old classroom staff reinforce the social skills attained in the 3 year old classroom.  Their classroom provides a more structured environment and a more challenging curriculum.

The goals of our curriculum include:

**Social: to help children feel comfortable in school, trust their environment, make friends, and feel as though they are part of a group.

**Emotional: to help children experience pride and self confidence, develop independence and self control.

**Cognitive: to help children become confident learners by letting them try out their own ideas and experience success, and by helping them to acquire learning skills.

**Physical: to help children increase their large and small muscle skills and feel confident about what their bodies can do.

Some of the goals for our preschool children are:

fine motor - stringing beads, printing, using scissors appropriately

gross motor - climbing, pedaling a bike, hopping, skipping, throwing and jumping

social / emotionally - talking to friends, playing well with others, expressing feelings appropriately

self help skills - dressing self, washing hands independently, toileting skills

readiness skills - letter, number, and name recognition
